A Short History of Blevins, Inc.
The company was started in 1957 as Mobile Home Parts Distributors. Today it stands as the oldest and largest distributor to the manufactured housing aftermarket, with a total of 14 locations throughout the eastern half of the United States. The company sells set-up, replacement, and add-on parts and accessories to the manufactured housing industry. We handle general hardware, plumbing, electrical and repair supplies for manufactured homes including air conditioning, heating and appliances. Our customers are mostly retail dealers, service companies and parts stores.
The Seventies
J.W. Blevins bought the Nashville-based business of less than 1 million in sales volume in 1971 and began a branch expansion program. The first branch was opened in September, 1971 in Mobile, Alabama, followed by a second branch in Lexington, Kentucky in 1972.
Another branch opened in Alexandria, Louisiana in 1974. Situated in the center of the state, this site is able to serve most of Louisiana and eastern Texas.
The Eighties
The Eighties saw two important acquisitions. In 1980, Leisure Products, Inc. of Rocky Mount, North Carolina was purchased, serving eastern North Carolina and parts of Virginia and South Carolina. In 1985, Jim’s Mobile Supply was acquired with two Ohio locations: Dayton and Edenberg (shortly moved to Kent, Ohio).
The Nashville branch moved to a new 50,000 sq. ft. building in 1985. At that time, the corporate office was separated into its own facility. In 1988, the Dayton location moved to a new, larger facility enabling it to serve all of Ohio. In 1989, the Kent, Ohio location was closed and moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; this relocation allowed the company to serve southern New York, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and all of Pennsylvania.
The Nineties
In 1993, the company made the decision to discontinue service to the recreational vehicle industry and specialize in Manufactured Housing.
Hickory Mobile Homes was purchased in 1994, adding three more locations: Hickory, North Carolina; Greenville, South Carolina; and Bristol, Virginia. The Hickory location was closed in 1995 and its customers were distributed between the Greenville, Bristol and Rocky Mount branches.
In 1995 a new company was formed for the manufacturing of anchors for manufactured housing; Home Pride, Inc. In 1998, Home Pride also began manufacturing fiberglass steps.
January, 1996 saw the opening of our eleventh branch of Springfield, Missouri, serving Missouri and northern Arkansas.
In January, 1998, a branch was opened in Liverpool, New York. Part of their territory came from the Harrisburg branch and expanded to Maine.
2000 and beyond
While the early part of this decade has seen an industry downturn, Blevins, Inc. has continued to succeed by improving customer service and gaining market share. In early 2000, we opened our twelfth branch in Valdosta, GA which currently services southern Georgia and parts of Florida.
In 2002, Alcoa, our second largest supplier, exited the vinyl skirting business and Blevins purchased the dies and equipment from Alcoa, allowing us to form Haverford Vinyl Products. Blevins now manufactures all of our vinyl skirting through a contract vinyl extruder and Haverford Vinyl Products, a subsidiary of Blevins, Inc., sells to approximately twenty outside distributors.
In 2006, Blevins, Inc acquired Florida Mobile home Supply, which provides HVAC and electrical installation services, as well as a full line of supplies, throughout Florida. Locations are in Jacksonville, Ocala and Tallahassee.
